Europeans feel betrayed by Washington/Trump: Zelensky should be more grateful

US President Donald Trump said on Monday he would give an update on the minerals deal with Ukraine on Tuesday evening, referring to his speech to Congress, his first since officially taking office.

President Trump also said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky should be more grateful for Washington's support for his country.

"I think he should be more grateful," President Trump told reporters during a White House event.

Meanwhile, Britain said on Monday that a series of proposals had been made to halt the fighting between Ukraine and Russia, after France suggested a plan for a month-long pause that would lead to peace talks, but US President Donald Trump hinted that he was running out of patience.

European countries, led by Britain and France, have rallied behind Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and are trying to draft a peace plan that includes Kiev, following last week's Oval Office clash between Presidents Zelenskyy and Trump.

"There are a number of proposals on the table," said British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's spokesman.

France, Britain and potentially other European countries have offered to send troops to Ukraine if a ceasefire is reached - an idea Moscow has already rejected - but they say they need support from the United States, or a "guarantee".

President Trump has redirected American policy by initiating talks with Moscow, without the involvement of Ukraine and without consulting other Western allies.

On Friday, President Trump publicly warned President Zelenskyy to agree, or face a cutoff of critical military aid.

On Monday, the President of the United States reacted angrily after sharing on the Truth Social network an Associated Press news story that quoted Mr. Zelenskyy as saying that "the end of the war is far, far away."

"This is the worst statement Zelenskyy has ever made and America will not tolerate it for much longer," President Trump wrote.

"It's what I said, that this man does not want peace as long as he has America's support, and Europe, in its meeting with Zelenskyy, made it clear that they cannot achieve this (peace) without the United States," he wrote.

President Zelenskyy says the ceasefire agreement must contain clear guarantees from the West to ensure that Russia, which launched a large-scale attack on Ukraine three years ago and controls 20 percent of the territory, will not attack again.

President Trump has refused to give such guarantees.

French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou said the clash in the Oval Office caused "two casualties": Ukraine's security and the eight-decade alliance between Europe and the United States.

In the French parliament, he thanked President Zelenskyy for his unwavering stance. He spoke of “a shocking scene, characterized by rudeness, a desire for humiliation, the aim of which was to force Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to surrender under threat.”

But the Europeans are continuing to work to keep the United States on their side. The British ambassador to the United States, Peter Mandelson, said that relations between Ukraine and the United States must start over, as President Trump's initiative to end the war is "the only option."

President Trump held a phone call with Russian President Putin last month and then announced that negotiations to end the war would begin soon, catching Zelenskyy and his other European allies, including the European Union and Britain, by surprise.

European leaders are now agreeing that they must spend more on defense to prove to Mr. Trump that the continent can defend itself. The EU will hold an emergency meeting on Thursday.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she will inform member states on Tuesday about plans to strengthen the European defense industry and the EU's military capabilities.

"We need an increase in defense capabilities, without any hesitation. We want a long-term peace, but long-term peace can only be built on strength, and strength begins with our strengthening," she said.

Russia has praised President Trump for changing US policy and criticized Mr. Zelensky for challenging him.

"We are seeing that the West, as a collective unit, has begun to partially lose its sense of community and that the fragmentation of the West has already begun," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

"There remains a group of states that are parties to the war, states that are expressing their willingness to continue supporting Ukraine, to support the war, and that want the continuation of hostilities," he added./ VOA
