Some MEPs have sent a letter to EC and EU officials, where they request that the results of the elections in Serbia not be recognized.
Members of the European Parliament from the European People's Party (EPP), the Greens and the Social Democrats (S&D) sent a letter to the President of the European Commission, the Commissioner for Enlargement and the EU High Representative for Integration and Security Policy, in which they demand an international investigation of the Serbian parliamentary, provincial and local elections that were under the auspices of the OSCE, the Council of Europe and the European Commission.
The letter also requests that the results of the election be withheld until a full independent investigation into election irregularities is completed.
The MPs demand an investigation with special attention to the elections for the Belgrade City Assembly, as well as their reporting to the European Parliament.
"We remain in support of the citizens of Serbia who are protesting for their opportunity to exercise their democratic rights, as well as for Serbia's membership in the European Union. Unfortunately, the serious allegations related to the recent elections are not in line with democratic standards and undermine this goal. Several international and local observation missions have concluded that the elections in Serbia cannot be considered free and fair and have found evidence of irregularities and open electoral fraud. The observation mission of the KRRT has also expressed concern about the local elections in the city of Belgrade", says the letter of the MEPs.
The letter states that some of the findings include allegations of vote-buying, abuse of public resources, forged signatures of support on electoral rolls, disproportionate government influence on the media, serious and well-planned voter roll manipulations and voter migration, including neighboring countries, as well as pressuring welfare recipients and state-owned enterprise workers to vote for the ruling party in order to keep their jobs and benefits.
On February 8, the European Parliament will vote on the resolution on the Serbian elections. The resolution was followed by debates in the plenary session in Strasbourg, as well as by the EP Foreign Affairs Committee (AFET).
