Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday he could invite his Syrian counterpart, Bashar al-Assad, to visit Turkey "at any moment."[
It is a sign that there may be reconciliation between Ankara and Damascus, as relations between them so broke down after the 2011 war.
"We can send [Assad] the invitation at any moment," Erdogan told reporters on the planes returning from Berlin, where he stayed to watch Euro 2024, the official Anadolu news agency and other media reported.
Turkey initially sought to overthrow the Assad regime when the Syrian conflict erupted with the violent crackdown on civilian protests in 2011.
But despite supporting various armed groups, Ankara has recently changed its stance and is now focused on, as Erdogan described in 2019, preventing the opening of a "terror corridor" in northern Syria.
Erdogan has long said he can consider mending relations with Assad.
"We have now come to a point that once Bashar al-Assad takes steps towards improving relations with Turkey, we will show his approach," Erdogan said.
Turkey has been trying to improve relations with Syria as the government faces pressure inside the country to repatriate millions of Syrian refugees in Turkey. /Rel
