Due to the devastating consequences of the earthquakes in Turkey, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared a state of emergency in the country. Erdogan, who described the earthquake as "one of the biggest catastrophes in our history", also acknowledged the "mistakes made" by the Turkish government "in managing the disaster".

"It is a fact that we have not been able to respond as quickly as we should", he admitted in one of the camps set up for the survivors.

On the other hand, Erdogan promised that all the houses and buildings collapsed as a result of the 7.8 and 7.6 magnitude earthquakes will be rebuilt within a year and the Turkish state itself will take over the payment of the rents of the people affected by earthquakes.

He also announced that he will act harshly against all those "ignorants" who have taken advantage of this disaster to rob shops and markets in the affected areas: "When those who commit these abuses are caught, measures will be taken right".
