Without Albanians, cocaine does not come to Europe. This is how the role of Albanians in the international cocaine traffic is currently described. Many of them are located in Guayaquil, Ecuador. The port of this city is the main logistical hub for cocaine that is transported to Europe and the rest of the world.
Some men from Kosovo were among the first Albanians to settle in Ecuador for this job. Investigative journalist from Albania, Artan Hoxha, who was recently in Latin America, said that the Kosovars had gone there cooperating with the Balkan groups, mainly Croats and Montenegrins.
Guayaquil, the city also known as the "Pearl of the Pacific". It is the most important coastal city of Ecuador and also the most populated city of this country, with over 3 million inhabitants.
Remzi Azemi and Fadil Kaçaniku are the two best-known Kosovars as former residents of Guayaquil. The first is said to be now in Germany, where, according to journalist Artan Hoxha, he was extradited from Ecuador. The second was killed. As usual, their presence there became known due to a series of assassinations.
To start from earlier, Remzi Azemi was arrested in 2014 during an anti-drug operation in the Balkans, together with 11 others, including Albanians and Ecuadorians. Azem's gang was accused of storing large quantities of drugs in Guayaquil, which they had prepared to bring to Europe. They were suspected of having infiltrated personnel in the administrative areas of the ports, which enabled them to obtain lists of containers and select those destined for Europe. However, Azemi was released from prison after a month.
The prosecution bodies in Ecuador had said that Azemi and Kaçaniku were family members. According to the Ecuadorian media, they had been using the same armored vehicle for some time.
Towards the end of 2017, Azemi was assassinated in the center of Guayaquil. He was in the same armored vehicle and the assassins, as reported by the media there, had used the moment to shoot several times when Azemi's wife had lowered the window to smoke a cigarette. But he was not killed. He was only injured. The assassination was clearly related to the conflicts over cocaine.
This event followed the execution of the Albanian Ilir Hidri (who was also part of the criminal gangs there) just a few months before the assassination of Remzi Azemi. The latter had Ecuadorian citizenship and had been living there for 8 years. The Ecuadorian authorities were investigating him for possible connection with the murder of Ilir Hidri.
Cocaine, then as now, is usually transported with the famous Ecuadorian bananas. In the first quarter of this year, in the port of Guayaquil alone, the police seized 15.8 tons of drugs, almost four times more than in the same period of 2021, according to AFP.
Journalist Artan Hoxha said a few days ago in Pressing at T7 that the activity of drug cartels in Latin America is connected "even with groups that are in the territory of Kosovo", but he emphasized that this country remains unimportant in the map of drug trafficking.
"Kosovo is not outside this global industry. Citizens of Kosovo know very well that cocaine is consumed in Pristina or in other big cities of Kosovo. And while it is consumed, where does it come from? Someone brings it," he says. /Express newspaper
