As the world is involved in several bitter conflicts and tensions have recently increased between states, there has been more and more talk about the possibility of a nuclear war.

What is known for sure is that if it did happen, it would be catastrophic for humanity.

In just 72 hours, a whopping 5 billion people would die, according to New York Times investigative reporter Annie Jacobsen.

The latter has spent years studying the possible effects of a nuclear war, and according to it, only two states have the greatest chance of surviving it.

The reason for the great global catastrophe is that nuclear war would release a giant black smoke that would cover entire continents, blocking the Sun's rays and possibly causing a mini-ice age.

"Most of the world, certainly the mid-elevations would be covered in ice sheets...places like Iowa and Ukraine would only have snow for 10 years," she said.

She said that agriculture would fail, and therefore many people would die.

"In addition, there is also radiation poisoning because the ozone layer will be damaged and destroyed so much that you cannot stay outside in the sunlight, people will be forced to live underground," she said.

Jacobsen said Professor Brian Toon, a leading expert in climate and atmospheric science, told her that only two countries could potentially survive a nuclear winter, New Zealand and Australia, which could 'keep agriculture alive' .
