The assassin of the prime minister of Slovenia has revealed the reason why he shot Robert Fico, leaving him seriously injured.

The 71-year-old writer Juraj Cintula said he shot the prime minister of his country because he "did not agree with the government's policies".

Suspected author Juraj Cintula had served in the past as a former employee of a private security company and is the author of a collection of poems. The news is announced by the local television Markiza.

Some media reports that Fico is unpopular in Slovakia because of his views, describing him as a populist who came to power on a pro-Russian and anti-American platform.

He vowed to end Slovakia's military support for Ukraine and has claimed that NATO and the United States provoked Moscow into going to war.

After his election victory, the new government immediately stopped arms shipments to Ukraine. Thousands of citizens took to the streets repeatedly across Slovakia to protest Fico's pro-Russian policies, including his plans to change the criminal code to eliminate a special anti-corruption prosecutor and take control of the media public.
