Katherine Rigby

Legendary American skier Katherine 'Kasha' Rigby is suspected to have died after an avalanche at a ski resort in southern Kosovo, reports say.

The death of a 54-year-old skier was first reported on Tuesday.

A regional police spokesman told Radio Free Europe that the avalanche victim was a 54-year-old foreign national.

The report did not specifically name Rigby as the avalanche victim at the Brezovica ski resort, but friends and loved ones of the skier began posting tributes on her Instagram account.

Ski Magazine reported that sources close to Rigby contacted the media about her death.

In Backcountry Magazine's report on Rigby's possible death, editor Adam Howard said she "epitomizes compassion and a free spirit."

"The entire outdoor and ski world is devastated by the loss of such a special soul," Howard said.

According to Ski Magazine, Rigby was an accomplished telemark skier who "aimed to redefine telemarking with her high-speed skiing style."
