Authorities in Alaska plan to resume a search Tuesday for a woman who waded into an Anchorage-area river over the weekend to rescue a dog but disappeared beneath the ice, Alaska State Troopers said.
“A man and woman were hiking on the North Fork Eagle River Trail around 2:15 p.m. Saturday when one of their dogs entered the water," troopers said in a statement Monday.
The two went into the river to help the dog, but the woman disappeared after entering an open body of water, forces said.
The woman "went into an open body of water in the Eagle River and disappeared under the ice," Alaska State Trooper communications director Austin McDaniel said Monday. "That was the last time she was seen by the man who was with her," he added.
A dive team searched under the ice for him on Sunday but came up short, authorities said. The next search is scheduled for Tuesday.
The North Fork Eagle River trailhead is about 20 miles northeast of downtown Anchorage. The Eagle River flows northwest into the region, north of downtown, into Cook Inlet.
