Tragedy has rocked a luxury cruise around Australia after an 80-year-old passenger was left stranded on Lizard Island and found dead the next day. The incident has forced Coral Expeditions to cancel the remainder of the Coral Adventurer cruise.
The incident occurred on October 25, during an excursion as part of a 60-day voyage on the luxury ship Coral Adventurer, which was sailing around the Australian continent.
According to local media, Suzanne Rees had pulled out of a planned climb to the top of the island after feeling unwell. Her daughter, Katherine Rees, said her mother was asked to disembark but was left unescorted by the crew.
The ship left the island at 3:40 p.m., without her missing being noticed.
Five hours passed before authorities were notified that the passenger was missing, subsequently launching a search and rescue operation on land and sea.
Suzanne Rees' body was found the next day on the island.
Her family expressed "shock and sadness" that the boat had left the island after the organized excursion, without realizing that she had been left behind.
Following the incident, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has issued a notice to the captain of the ship, prohibiting the acceptance of new passengers. AMSA confirmed that the ship will return to Cairns, where authority staff will await it for further investigation.
Investigations are focusing on why Rees was not involved in counting passengers before the ship departed the island.
Coral Expeditions CEO Mark Fifield said that following the tragic death of the passenger and several previous mechanical problems, the decision had been made to cancel the remainder of the trip.
"It became increasingly clear, given the circumstances of the last week, that we could not deliver on our promise to provide high-quality experiences for passengers," Fifield said in a statement.
According to him, all passengers will receive a full refund, while the company is organizing their return on special flights, along with the crew and the ship.
Amsa and company representatives have expressed their condolences to the family and relatives of Suzanne Rees.
