A Turkish court has sentenced 11 people, including the owner of a luxury hotel in the mountain resort of Kartalkaya, to life in prison after a fire that killed 78 people, including about 30 children.
The fire broke out on January 21 at the Grand Kartal Hotel in northern Turkey, engulfing the entire building in minutes. Investigations revealed that safety regulations had been violated and that the alarm system was not working on the night of the incident.
In addition to the 78 victims, 137 others were injured, while entire families disappeared in the flames. Relatives of the victims placed their photos in front of the gym in the city of Bolu, where the court hearings were held.
According to Turkish media, in addition to the hotel owner, the hotel director and several members of the board of directors were also given life sentences. A deputy mayor in Bolu and the local fire chief were also sentenced to prison, and the court's decision was greeted with applause in the courtroom.

The court sentenced a total of 18 other defendants, most of them hotel employees, to sentences ranging from 12 to 22 years in prison, while three people, including two chefs, were acquitted.
"It is a historic decision that brings comfort to the hearts of all families," said Bilsay Sarper Arslan, the grandson of one of the victims.
The hotel owner, Halit Ergul, denied any responsibility, blaming the gas equipment supplier.
"I didn't even allow fireworks for weddings in front of the hotel because I didn't want the birds to be harmed," he told the court.
The fire, which broke out in the hotel restaurant just before 3:30 a.m., sent shockwaves across the country. Witnesses and relatives of the victims tearfully recounted the immense pain left behind by the tragedy.
"I go to the cemetery every day. No psychologist can ease this pain," said Hilmi Altin, who lost his wife and 9-year-old daughter in the deadly fire.
