US President Donald Trump secretly left Turkey last month, with the public told he was traveling on Air Force One. According to a report by The Washington Post, a credible threat from Iran to the president prompted an extraordinary security operation.
The incident occurred on July 8, after Trump attended a NATO summit in Ankara. Television footage showed the president boarding the traditional US presidential plane, Air Force One, before departing Turkey.
However, according to sources and materials reviewed by The Washington Post, Trump did not stay on that plane. Minutes after boarding Air Force One, he was secretly transferred to a smaller military aircraft, a C-32A, which was parked next to the presidential plane.
The transfer was carried out in an unusual manner. Trump and several of his aides allegedly used an airport catering vehicle to exit Air Force One without being noticed by reporters and personnel on board.
At the same time, White House reporters continued to travel on Air Force One, believing the president was on board. The plane thus served as a “decoy,” or diversionary plane, to conceal the president’s real location.
The threat from Iran
According to US officials cited in the report, the operation was organized after US intelligence had identified a concrete threat to Trump or the plane on which he would be traveling.
The risk was particularly high due to military tensions between the United States and Iran. Just the night before Trump left Turkey, the US had resumed attacks on Iran after negotiations between the two countries failed.
Turkey, where Trump was, is a NATO member and borders Iran, making the security situation even more sensitive.
New presidential plane at the center of concerns
The operation occurred just days after Trump had begun using a new Boeing 747-8 aircraft, donated by Qatar for presidential use.
According to previous reports, the new aircraft did not yet have some of the advanced defense systems found on traditional US presidential aircraft. This had caused concerns within the US security establishment.
For this reason, according to the report, Trump was transported from Turkey on a C-32A, a modified Boeing 757 aircraft used to transport senior American officials.
The plane took off with the call sign "Reach 18," rather than the call sign "Air Force One," which is used when the president is on board.
Reporters didn't know Trump had changed planes
One of the most unusual aspects of the operation was the fact that journalists traveling with the president were not informed that he had changed planes.
According to materials reviewed by The Washington Post, journalists were asked to keep the window curtains of Air Force One closed during departure from Turkey.
Meanwhile, the C-32A departed on its own for the UK. Flight records show that Air Force One then continued on to Mildenhall Air Base, giving the impression that the president was on board.
Trump arrived in Britain later and appeared on camera disembarking from Air Force One, preserving the public version of the trip.
He then transferred to the new presidential plane to continue his journey to Washington.
The White House did not confirm the operation.
When asked about the report, the White House did not confirm that Trump was secretly transported on the C-32A.
White House spokesman Steven Cheung defended the security of the new presidential plane, stating that it is equipped with the necessary protocols and technologies to ensure the president's safety.
The Department of Defense also did not provide details on the operation, while the Secret Service did not respond to requests for comment.
A practice used before
The use of diversionary aircraft to conceal the president's location is not entirely unknown.
In the past, US presidents have used alternate aircraft when facing specific threats or traveling to dangerous areas. One notable case occurred during President Bill Clinton's visit to Pakistan in 2000.
Security experts argue that protecting the president takes priority and that details of how his movements are organized should be kept secret.
However, Trump's case raises questions about transparency, as journalists on board the presidential plane were unaware that the president had changed planes and that his location was being deliberately concealed.
According to the report, the operation shows the high level of concern of American authorities for Trump's safety at a time of high tensions with Iran.
