Covid increased measles cases around the world

Measles infections are on the rise again. At the beginning of the year the number of infections reported worldwide shows a 79 percent increase, the UN organization for the protection of children UNICEF and the World Health Organization, WHO, announces. One reason is that vaccination campaigns were interrupted by corona pandemics. The lack of vaccinations now threatens the lives of millions of children, UN agencies warned.

Particularly strongly affected by measle over the past twelve months have been Somalia, Rome, Afghanistan, Nigeria and Ethiopia. Experts fear that as a result of the war of Russian aggression there will be an increase in cases even in Ukraine, where in 2017-2019 the highest levels of measles infections have been recorded.

Typical complications from measles are middle ear infections and pneumonia. One of the worst diseases the measles virus can cause is meningitis, which can lead to severe brain damage and mental disability, and at worst can also cause death.

According to UNICEF and WHO after the 2020 corona pandemic outbreak more than 23 million children failed to make routine measles vaccines. In 43 countries, vaccination campaigns that were postponed due to the pandemic have not yet been fully completed. 203 million people, mostly children, are affected by measles.

The measles outbreak shows the weaknesses of immunization campaigns and after reporting several cases from West Africa experts now expect an increase in tropical fever infections.
