Strikes are a regular occurrence in Europe, as workers stop work to fight for better pay and conditions. Walks are sometimes planned months in advance, but others are announced at the last minute, showing that it's always worth checking before you travel.
Germany: Nationwide transport strike in March
Passenger trains in Germany will be hit by a strike on Thursday 7 March. The 35-hour walkout is being organized by train drivers' union GDL after negotiations over pay and working hours broke down. The disruption to passenger services will start at 2am on Thursday and last until 1pm on Friday. The union has warned that strikes without warning will become more common. The industrial action follows the local transport walkout earlier this month led by the Ver.di union.
Frankfurt cancels flights as Lufthansa strike hits Germany
Air travel in Germany will also be hit by strikes on March 7-8 as Lufthansa's ground staff walk out. The disruption is expected to begin at 4am on Thursday and last until 7am on Saturday, with flight delays and cancellations possible. Frankfurt Airport has canceled all departures on Thursday. The Ver.di union demands a salary increase for its members. The next round of negotiations will take place on March 13.
Spain: The strikes of Renfe train drivers are cancelled
Members of the Spanish Union of Railway Managers (SEMAF) have called off strikes planned for March after reaching an agreement. The multi-day strike was called for non-compliance with contract clauses on working hours and a freeze on the drivers' employment plan. This would have affected Renfe trains across Spain.
UK: Border Force attacks threatened over Easter
The end of the Easter holidays could be marred by UK travel chaos as Border Force workers threaten to walk out. PCS union members are being voted into strike action in a dispute over working hours and conditions. The result of the vote is expected on March 22, with possible strikes no earlier than April 5. Departures may cause long queues and delays at London Heathrow Airport.
Italy: Nationwide strike to hit air and train travel
A nationwide 24-hour strike in Italy on March 8 is set to hit airlines, trains, ferries and public transport. Both public and private transport operators will be affected, causing major travel disruptions across the country. Milan will face further disruption on March 22 as the city's public transport workers stage a 24-hour strike affecting the metro, buses and trams.
Passengers traveling through Verona's Villafranca airport on March 22 could face disruption as air traffic controllers go on strike. The walkout, which will last from 10am to 6pm, coincides with a strike by Air Dolomiti cabin crew that is likely to disrupt flights between Italy and Germany.
Train strike in Italy in March
Italian-owned rail company Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) will be hit by a strike on March 23-24, causing disruption to local, regional and long-distance trains. The walkout will begin on the evening of March 23 and will last 24 hours. Trenitalia and Trenord will be severely affected but will have a minimum guaranteed timetable. An additional nationwide rail strike on March 13 will disrupt trains as track maintenance staff stage an eight-hour walkout.
France: Seven-month strike notice could hit Paris Olympics
Disruption is expected on the Ile-de-France bus and metro network after the CGT-RATP has announced a seven-month strike notice from February 5 to September 9. Workers at the state-owned public transport company say they are walking out over pay. The attacks could strike during the 2024 Paris Olympics if a deal is not reached.
