A man who pushed his pregnant wife off a cliff to her death to collect life insurance has been jailed for life. Hakan Aysal , 40, was told on Tuesday that he will spend at least 30 years in prison before judges at the High Criminal Court in Fethiye, southern Turkey, review the verdict.
The court had previously heard that Aysal pushed the woman Semra, 32, off a 1,000-metre cliff in Butterfly Valley, a scenic spot about 10 miles south of Fethiye in Turkey, in June 2018.
Aysal had convinced his wife, who was afraid of heights, to take a selfie on the edge of the cliff before he pushed her. He then tried to win an insurance payout of £40,000 from a policy taken out shortly before she died.
Hakan Aysal, 40, has been jailed for life in Turkey after being found guilty of impregnating seven-month pregnant Semra, 32.
Aysal had taken his wife to a very beautiful place over 1,000 meters above the Valley of the Butterflies in southern Turkey in June 2018 and there he threw her off the rocks. Police were alerted to the suspicious death when Aysal tried to claim life insurance just days after Semra died.
Aysal, who initially denied murder, tried to appeal on the basis of his mental problems after being found guilty a few weeks ago - but doctors have since declared him sane.
He was brought back to court on October 24 to have his sentence confirmed. During the trial, witnesses told how Aysal was 'completely calm' as he called for help after Serma fell to his death.
Sait Erturk, a passing driver who was stopped by Aysal, described him as 'careless' and said he did not come with them to look for his wife's body.
Mr Erturk told the court: “I was driving there when I saw someone waving at me and I stopped. Hakan came and said that his wife had fallen off the cliff.
"We immediately got out of the car and started looking for him, but we couldn't see him from where we were. We tried to get closer to the edge for a better view. Hakan didn't come down there with us. We stayed there until the police came.
"Hakan was very carefree and calm. He wasn't acting like a man whose wife had just fallen off a cliff.' the witnesses said.
