Scholz will travel to Beijing: He will "sell" a part of Hamburg's
Port of Hamburg

The German government is pushing ahead with a controversial deal to allow a state-owned Chinese company to take over the port of Hamburg.

After an internal clash (the gray allies and liberals are against), the Chinese giant "Cosco" is being offered a reduced share quota, 24.9% from the 35% that was the initial offer.

It is one of China's latest investments in maritime trade hubs in Europe, some of which are entirely under its control.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who supports the purchase, will travel to China next month with a delegation of German businessmen.

But the partners of the governing coalition have warned of the risk of increasing Chinese influence in the German infrastructure.

"We have learned that dependence on countries that can prioritize their interests and then blackmail us through this dependence is no longer an abstract phenomenon. See the case of Russian gas. It is a reality. We must not repeat the same mistakes", says Robert Habeck, Minister of Economy in Germany.

China's growing penetration of European ports has sparked debate within the European Union. Leaders of member countries are trying to strike a balance between attracting Chinese businesses and limiting their impact on the bloc's commercial life.
