Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is aiming to become the main candidate to take over the post of NATO chief.
In an interview with a Ukrainian media Johnson said that this decision is a good idea and there is such a plan.
"I think that this time I will be lucky and that I am an excellent candidate. It must be said that we now have a stronger NATO than ever", the former conservative leader emphasized, concretizing the voices that had been circulating in the past weeks.
An obstacle for him could be the rule that determines that the head of NATO that the candidate must be a citizen of the European Union, something that after Brexit. Great Britain is no more. He recalled that former Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi suggested that a representative of the European Union be appointed as the next Secretary General of NATO.
"I totally disagree with him. I think there are other candidates outside the European Union. It doesn't have to be the EU. I certainly consider myself a candidate. It is a good and important position", added the former British Prime Minister.
It would be the fourth time that the British take on this important role in the international arena, but critics think that Johnson will most likely get the veto of French President Macron. Johnson stressed that NATO is stronger than ever as Ukraine's membership is a prospect and that new members Sweden and Finland will soon join it.
Jens Stoltenberg, NATO's acting secretary-general, who has been in office since October 1, 2014, was due to resign last year and planned to head the central bank in his native Norway, but because of the attack of Russia against Ukraine, it was decided to extend the deadline until September 30, 2023.
