Mountainous areas of Switzerland were covered in snow on Saturday, causing difficulties for road traffic.

In Bettmeralp, canton of Valais, and in Grindelwald, canton of Bern, citizens woke up to a white landscape and lots of snow.

According to Meteo Schweiz, the altitude limit where snow fell fluctuated between 1,800 and 2,100 meters. In the western and southern Alps, there was up to 50 centimeters of snow.

The Gotthard Pass was closed in both directions. The Tiefenbach–Gletz and Wasen–Meiringen roads also remain closed due to the rain.

While it snows in the mountains, it rains in the lower areas of Switzerland.

Snow has also blanketed the mountains of Italy. The first snowfall was recorded in Cervinia, surprising tourists and residents with a fabulous landscape.

Within a few hours, the rain turned into white flakes, some of which were large, covering the valley and surrounding peaks.

Temperatures dropped to around 0°C and the alpine landscape took on its winter splendor very early, offering spectacular images that symbolically mark the start of the cold season in the mountains.
