An election rally in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu turned into tragedy on Saturday, with at least 36 people, including children, killed in a massive stampede.

Tens of thousands of people had gathered in Karur district to attend a campaign event for actor-turned-politician Vijay. The event, according to local media, was postponed for several hours, while television footage showed people fainting from the overcrowding and lack of air, the BBC reports.

Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian confirmed that the victims included at least 16 women, nine men and six children. More than 50 others were injured.

The state's chief minister, MK Stalin, said doctors from nearby districts had been called in to provide additional assistance, while the families of the victims would be given a compensation of one million rupees (about $11,300). He stressed that an investigation into the incident had been launched.

In a public statement, Vijay expressed "great sorrow" and said his heart was "broken" by the loss of life. He sent condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also reacted on the X network, calling the event "sad" and "deeply painful."

Such fatal events are not uncommon in India. This year alone has seen several similar incidents, including mass stampedes during the Hindu festival Kumbh Mela and outside a cricket stadium.
