Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft and one of the richest people in the world, has admitted to having two extramarital affairs with Russian women.

He made these statements during an internal meeting at the Gates Foundation, where he also apologized for his previous contacts with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who committed suicide in prison in 2019.

"I had relationships, one with a Russian bridge player I met at such events, and one with a Russian nuclear physicist I met through business activities," he told employees, The Times quoted him as saying.

The billionaire appears frequently in files released by the Justice Department regarding Epstein. The documents suggest they met several times even after Epstein's conviction in 2008.

Gates said he first met Epstein in 2011 and was aware of "an 18-month period" restricting his travel, but admitted he had not properly investigated the financier's background.

In a recording obtained by The Wall Street Journal, he told employees that it was a "big mistake to spend time with Epstein" but that "I've never spent time with victims."

"I didn't do anything illegal. I didn't see anything illegal ," he said.

He continued to meet with the convicted sex offender, despite Melinda French Gates, his then-wife, expressing concerns about it in 2013. “To her credit, she was always somewhat skeptical about the Epstein case,” Gates said.

The Microsoft founder said he had seen Epstein as far back as 2014 and had flown on a private jet with him, but "never stayed overnight" or visited Epstein's island.

The apology came weeks after the Justice Department released new documents, which appear to contain emails drafted by Epstein himself, alleging that Gates planned to give his wife antibiotics without her knowledge, fearing she had contracted a sexually transmitted infection from the Russian prostitute.

A spokesman for Gates called the claims " absolutely absurd and completely false" and an attempt by Epstein to "set up and defame" Gates.

Gates said on Tuesday that his former science advisor, Boris Nikolic, who was also close to Epstein, knew about his two affairs and had told Epstein. The latter then apparently used this information about the relationship with the bridge player to threaten Gates after he refused to participate in a new charitable fund that Epstein was trying to create.

Gates acknowledged to staff the difficulty his ties to Epstein could have on their future work. "This is clearly the opposite of the foundation's values and its goals," he said.
