Turkey in the midst of the US-Iran conflict, what will Erdogan do?

Turkey is analyzing all possible options in the event of an escalation of the conflict between its neighbor, Iran, and the United States, a Turkish diplomatic source confirmed to Reuters.

Tehran and Washington resumed negotiations earlier this month, as the United States has increased its military presence in the Middle East. Iran has warned it will strike American bases in the region if attacked, but diplomacy remains on the table. Iran's top diplomat said Tuesday that a deal was "within reach" if dialogue was prioritized.

Ankara, which shares an eastern border with Iran, believes that a military intervention would destabilize the region. As a NATO member and US ally, but also a Muslim country and neighbor of Iran, Turkey considers diplomacy to be the most favorable path.

“All aspects of measures that can be taken in the event of a negative development are being assessed,” the source said on condition of anonymity. According to him, all scenarios are being considered to ensure the safety of Turkish citizens, while any action that would “violate Iran’s sovereignty” remains “out of the question.”

The source did not provide details on the specific measures being analyzed. Meanwhile, the Turkish presidency's office for combating disinformation rejected reports that Ankara is planning to intervene in Iranian territory to stem a potential influx of refugees.
