The European Union will give ukrainian war refugees the opportunity to convert to euros, or dollars, and put their national currency Hryvnia into use.
The aim is to further support refugees who have difficulty exchanging their banknotes in EU currencies.
The recommendation invites member states to create national schemes that would allow the conversion of hryvnia to similar eu-like conditions.
The schemes would enable displaced persons from Ukraine, including children, to exchange up to 10,000 hryvnia (approximately €310) per person. This will be free of charge and with the official exchange rate as published by the National Bank of Ukraine. The duration of these schemes will be at least three months.
The recommendation will now be formally approved by the Council by written procedure. The preliminary date for adoption is April 19th.
Recommendations are not legally binding acts. Therefore, the current implementation and creation of schemes will be decided by member states according to their national situation. A number of EU countries have already established national agreements for this purpose.
