A Syrian court has sentenced former President Bashar al-Assad to death in absentia, after finding him guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during the Syrian civil war.

The decision is among the most important taken by Syria's new transitional authorities towards figures from the toppled regime.

Bashar al-Assad was not present in the courtroom. He and his brother, Maher al-Assad, fled Syria for Russia after rebels entered Damascus in December 2024 and ended the Assad family's rule.

Because he is abroad, the trial against the former president took place in absentia.

Al-Assad's younger brother, Maher, was also sentenced to death — also in absentia.

The Syrian civil war, which lasted about 14 years, caused about 500,000 deaths and displaced millions of people.

Assad's cousin also sentenced to death

In the same trial, the court also sentenced Atef Najib, Bashar al-Assad's maternal cousin, to death.

Najib is accused of leading the suppression of protests in Daraa, in southern Syria, in 2011. The protests in this city turned into a national uprising and then into a civil war that engulfed the entire country.

Najib, a former brigadier general in the Syrian army, was then heading the Political Security Branch in Daraa.

Unlike Assad, Najib was in court when the verdict was announced. He appeared inside the defendants' cage, dressed in prison uniform, as the judge read out the sentence under tight security.

A historic process for the new authorities

The decision against Assad is the first of this level by the Syrian transitional authorities against the country's former leader.

During this year, the new authorities have initiated proceedings against several of the former regime's officials, both those in Syria and those who have left the country.

The trials aim to address accountability for crimes committed during Assad's rule and during the long civil conflict.

Assad's death sentence, however, faces a major practical obstacle: he is in Russia, which makes the implementation of the decision dependent on the Syrian authorities being able to secure his extradition or surrender.

The decision marks an important symbolic moment for the victims of the Syrian conflict and the efforts of the new authorities to prosecute key figures of the ousted regime.
