Former Chancellor Angela Merkel will be awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, the highest honor of the German state, by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. So far, only two former chancellors, Konrad Adenauer and Helmut Kohl, both Christian Democrats (CDU), have received this award. However, Mr. Steinmeier's decision is proving quite controversial.

"Angela Merkel was the first woman who spoke about the fate of our country from above and experienced all the difficulties of politics," the co-chair of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), Saskia Esken, told the network (RND). "For 16 years, many have often thought: why are you doing this to yourself?

What drove her was the deep seriousness and great sense of duty with which she represented our country, at home and abroad, and she excelled in the many crises of her tenure with a sense of poise," Ms. Esken added as she referring to the integrity and sense of humor of the former chancellor,

The SPD leader, who worked with Mrs Merkel in her last government, also said she highly valued her diplomatic skills, "her wisdom and sensitivity, qualities with which she succeeded time and again in building stable coalitions, invaluable qualities in these times of crisis and unrest".

The General Secretary of the Liberals (FDP), Vijan Djir-Sarai, however, declared for his part, in the RND, that at the end of Mrs. Merkel's term, the country was not in a good condition, emphasizing however. at the same time that "historical greatness in politics can only be recognized with a significant time delay".

The co-chairman of the Greens, Omnid Nouripour, told the same network that the former chancellor defined Germany as a few and "one should not agree with all her work to recognize her great merits". While the co-chairman of the Left, Martin Sirdevan called the award that Mrs. Merkel will receive "a relic from the imperial era" and noted that the former chancellor had a controversial role that deserves criticism rather than praise.

"Merkel has destroyed Germany and left it in ruins," party vice-president Stefan Brandner told RND from the Alternative for Germany party.

A few months ago, Wolfgang Schäuble, referring to the "great chancellors", had mentioned only Konrad Adenauer, Willy Brandt and Helmut Kohl, while especially for Mrs. Merkel, he had emphasized that "the list is currently complete and it is too early for a final assessment". He even specifically referred to the fact that "even now as far as Russia is concerned, it cannot admit that we have made mistakes".

History professor Andreas Renter makes a different criticism, with an article in the Tagesspiegel newspaper, where he emphasizes that with his decision Frank-Walter Steinmeier "damages democracy and its credibility", while with the award "he praises not only his former boss, but also the troubled legacy of recent years".

The current federal president has served as foreign minister under Mrs. Merkel and is seen as one of the initiators of rapprochement with Russia.
