The Netherlands' main airport Schiphol is changing course in favor of protecting the environment and reducing noise.

By the end of 2025, there will be no more night flights at Amsterdam Airport. Private jets will also be banned at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport. The airport announced that this will lead to "smoother, cleaner and better aviation". Noisier aircraft such as the Boeing 747 will also be phased out.

In principle, even private jets will no longer be allowed to land at Schiphol Airport, because they cause "disproportionately high noise pollution and CO2 emissions per passenger", the airport announced. Environmental groups and local residents reacted positively.

In the future, planes departing from Amsterdam Airport will not be allowed to fly between midnight and 6 am. Also, no more planes will be allowed to land in Amsterdam until 5 am. According to the airport, about 10,000 night flights are affected by these measures.

The Dutch government had decided some time ago that due to noise and environmental pollution, Amsterdam airport must reduce the number of flights from a maximum of 500,000 to 440,000 per year by next year. A maximum limit of 460,000 flights will initially apply from November.

Airlines and tour operators reacted with criticism to the announcements. Dutch airline KLM, based in Schiphol, and four other airlines filed a lawsuit against the decision.
