The heart of this extreme heat wave is in France

The red alert for high temperatures, in place in 15 Italian cities today and 16 tomorrow, according to the Ministry of Health, no longer seems sufficient. Perhaps we should move to another level, even to "code black."

This is also because in Provence, France, two children have died after being left inside a vehicle, most likely as a result of high temperatures.

In Central and Western Europe, the heat wave stretching from Portugal to Sweden has not only brought temperatures up to 12 degrees higher than the seasonal average, but has also triggered alerts in all countries affected by the hot air masses originating from North Africa, which have covered half of the continent with a "scorching bubble". This situation is expected to continue at least until the end of the month.

Experts speak of the so-called "omega block", referring to the shape of the Greek letter Ω that the African anticyclone takes on meteorological maps: very high temperatures in the center and lower ones at the edges of the system. This is also confirmed by the situation in the interior of Anatolia in Turkey, where temperatures are 4-5 degrees lower than average, although the area is usually among the hottest.

After the second hottest May ever recorded, June is also expected to rank among the record months. According to the Italian Institute of Atmospheric and Climatic Sciences (Isac-Cnr), the average temperature during 2025 was 3.02 degrees higher than the reference average.

The alarm is also high for the rivers. The National Association of Water and Irrigation Management Consortia (Anbi) reports that the situation in the Po river basin and in the main rivers of Northern Italy was expected due to the lack of snow during the winter and high temperatures. However, the rapid drop in flows has surprised experts: in just one week, the Po river has lost 60% of its volume.

Electricity consumption has reached very high levels, causing power outages in the central areas of Turin and Milan.

A study published in the journal Nature Climate Change shows that Italy, along with Mexico and Kenya, is among the countries where thermal stress has increased the most since the 1970s. Unlike Mexico, which is located in the tropical zone, and Kenya on the equator, Italy is facing an unusual increase in temperatures.

Due to the heat wave, the Italian government has restored the possibility for some economic sectors to suspend or reduce work activity, giving them access to special financial support schemes.

However, the heart of this extreme heat wave is in France, although Spain, Germany, Belgium and the UK are also facing scorching temperatures. The hot air masses come from the Sahara. In Morocco, temperatures range from 39 to 42 degrees Celsius between Casablanca and Rabat, while inland areas reach up to 44 degrees.

In France, 54 departments were placed on maximum alert level today – a historic record – affecting some 38.8 million inhabitants. In Spain, thermometers have reached 45 degrees Celsius, while in England temperatures of 38 to 40 degrees are expected, with records also possible in London. The British meteorological service, Met Office, predicts breaking the records for maximum June temperatures, set in 1957 and 1976 with 35.6 degrees Celsius.

In Belgium, there are also concerns about the survival of birds in cities. "On the surface of roofs, temperatures reach 50-60 degrees," warns biologist Romaine de Jaegere.

According to the World Health Organization, over the past four years in Europe, more than 200,000 people have died from heat-related causes. Yesterday alone, in Parma, over 1,000 people went to emergency rooms and medical assistance centers, while 30% of them were over 75 years old.
