Barzan Kamal Majeed, the head of a criminal gang that trafficked immigrants in dinghies and trucks in England, known by the nickname "Scorpion", has been put in handcuffs after two years on the run.
He was arrested in Iraq by Kurdistan region security forces this Monday.
Majeed, a former Nottingham mechanic, had been missing since November 2022, when he was due to appear in court in Belgium on charges of human trafficking.
"Akrepi" was sentenced to 10 years in prison in absentia, as well as fined 968,000 euros.
The "Scorpion" was identified during a joint investigation between British, Belgian, Dutch and French authorities.
Akrepi is accused of smuggling migrants into the UK between July 2018 and November 2019 using dinghies, lorries and shipping containers.
In an interview from the escape published only 3 days ago by the BBC, he claimed that he had crossed about 10,000 immigrants into England illegally.
