48 million birds were destroyed in the EU and Britain, the reason for bird flu

An estimated 48 million birds have been culled across the UK and European Union over the past year as a result of the largest ever recorded outbreak of bird flu.

In the UK, 161 cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) were detected in poultry and birds, leading to the culling of 3.2 million birds.

This compared to the previous record of 26 cases in 2020/21.

The UK government said the birds culled were a "small proportion" of total production, around 20 million birds a week.

There have also been 1,727 cases of bird flu in the UK wild bird population, in 406 sites involving 59 bird species.

Last week, British authorities placed an expanded geographic area under quarantine.

In previous years, the virus has largely disappeared during the summer months, but this outbreak has continued throughout the year, proving to spread more easily in bird populations.
