327 deaths caused by deadly heatwave in Spain

The extreme heat wave that has gripped Spain has claimed at least 327 lives since June 21, while the country has recorded some of the highest June temperatures on record.

According to Spain's national meteorological agency, the heatwave ended on Thursday, but its consequences have been dramatic. Based on data dating back to 1950, June 23 was recorded as the hottest June day ever recorded in the country.

The most extreme temperatures were recorded in northern Spain, where Bilbao Airport set new records for both maximum daytime and minimum nighttime temperatures.

Since the start of the high temperature monitoring season in mid-May, Spanish health authorities have recorded a total of 611 deaths related to extreme heat.

Meanwhile, the heatwave has also hit other parts of Europe. France recorded its hottest day on June 24, with the average temperature exceeding 30 degrees Celsius for the first time in 24 hours, while 40 drowning deaths have been reported in the past week.
