A powerful cyber attack has involved several western countries today. According to Italian media, the attack was detected by the National Agency for Cyber Security, and includes not only Italy, but also France, Finland, but also Canada and the United States.

It is about the so-called "ransomware", i.e. a virus that threatens the distribution of personal data, or the blocking of access to the rightful owners, if a sum of money is not paid in the form of a ransom, which is usually required in the form of cryptocurrency. For private customers it is usually a few tens of dollars, while for larger companies the figures can be very significant.

The ransomware of this attack has targeted VMware ESXi servers in particular, and according to preliminary analysis, about 1,000 servers of this type are already infected.

These viruses are presented in the form of an ordinary file, mostly a pdf, attached to seemingly reliable emails, practically a clone of those of government institutions.

The moment the attached document is opened, which usually claims to be an invoice, the virus penetrates the computer or smartphone by cloning the tool.

Corriere Della Sera writes that there is no confirmation of a link between this attack and Tim's problems, which were reported on Wednesday morning.

Acea, the Italian electricity, water and gas company, was hit by a very serious ransomware attack on Thursday, making it difficult to restore full operations. The hacker attack is happening in many places simultaneously.

The first to notice the attack were the French. The wave of attacks then moved to other countries, including Italy. Right now there are several thousand compromised servers around the world, from European countries like France, Finland and Italy, to North America, Canada and the United States. In Italy there are dozens of attacks that have been stopped, but according to analysts they are destined to increase.
