The Durrës Prosecutor's Office launched investigations into the suspected toxic substances exported from Albania to Thailand, as it said in its first communique, after the referral from customs.

But the rush of the customs to refer this scandal to the prosecution body, more than trying to find the real people responsible for the scandal, is an attempt to remove the responsibilities of the customs of Durrës.

Corruption and nepotism in this institution are threatening today to put Albania on the black map of toxic substance trafficking countries, as the file is too big for the capacities of the Durrës Prosecutor's Office.

The prosecution, in the first instance, must reveal the responsibilities of customs. Was the load checked? Were the verifications of the contents of the containers with the accompanying documentation carried out? How were more than 800 tons of toxic waste passed with forged papers, declaring them as iron oxide, and what was the role of customs?

If the investigation provides answers to these questions, then it will also be understood what role of Durrës customs has in the trafficking of these toxic wastes.

If these connections are investigated by the Prosecutor's Office, questions will be answered as to why the customs raised the bar in this case, or even other times according to the logic of the self-declaration of the materials in the containers.

From the investigation, the prosecution may also discover that behind this traffic there may be a powerful group operating at customs for corrupt and personal interests and the connections of this group with the general head of customs, Gent Gazheli, through Klodian Çani, also known by the nickname as the "customs hunger" of the deeds in this institution.

All the indications lead to the logical conclusion that behind the passage of the cargo there is a structured criminal group at the customs, for which this article alone is not enough.

The group, on the one hand, is suspected of undertaking the falsification of documentation for over 800 tons of toxic waste and on the other hand distributes to the media notices of arrests of citizens for non-declaration of 11,000 or 20,000 euros.

INVESTIGATIONS

The evidence and facts collected by the Durrës prosecutor's office so far show that the waste was produced by the Kurum company, while their transfer to the Port of Durrës has turned into a ping-pong of responsibility between the institutions.

But who are the main ones responsible? It is suspected that Kurum and the company contracted by it for the transport of toxic waste have corrupted the chain of customs investigation, starting from Elbasan, Durrës and up to the General Directorate of Customs.

Sources of Voxnews.al show that regarding the suspicious cargo, the head of Customs, Gent Gazheli was informed in the last ten days of July, before the scandal was made public by Bloomberg.

However, the investigations have so far revealed that the Kurum Company has used the Sokolaj shpk company to remove responsibility from itself, while both companies have submitted fictitious sales invoices to the customs, as if the cargo was iron oxide, at a time when they are dust residues of furnace, which is considered toxic./continues...
