Kyriakos Mitsotakis can include Fredi Beleri in the safe list of New Democracy for the elections for the European Parliament held from June 6 to 9 this year.

This is what the Greek media write. According to the portal 'Parapolitika', this could be a strategy of Mitsotakis to express his indignation towards the official Brussels that ignored the successive requests of the official Athens to put pressure on Albania for his release and the oath as the mayor of Himara.

Parapolitika writes that this hypothesis has been put on the negotiating table for the selection of candidates for MEPs from the ranks of New Democracy. Apart from the symbolic character of this selection, Mitsotakis' move is also considered as an electoral strategy to attract the votes of the extremists, who have criticized him for his soft attitude towards Albania on the Beleri issue.

The Special Court in Albania sentenced Fredi Beleri to two years in prison after finding him guilty of buying and selling votes. The decision can be appealed within two weeks by his lawyers. However, even an appeal decision is not expected before the elections for MEPs in the EP.

This means that if elected in these elections, Fredi Beleri would resolve a unique case in the world, not only as elected mayor and convicted by justice, but also as an elected but convicted MEP.

If he is nominated by Mitsotakis and elected MEP, the pressure on Albania to release him may increase. However, this is not the first time that our country collides with Greek MEPs. In 2018, Albania declared non grata the Greek Cypriot MEP Eleni Theocarus after the anti-Albanian calls she made from Bularati, after the funeral of Konstantinos Katsifas.
