Opposition parties in Greece have demanded an explanation from the government after a Wall Street Journal report alleged that the US ambassador to Greece had allegedly stated that the United States had been involved in the overthrow of the Romanian government and could do the same in Greece.
According to the Wall Street Journal, US Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle allegedly made these statements during a dinner in March attended by Greek and American officials.
Referring to the expected fall of Ilie Bolojan's center-right government in Romania, Guilfoyle allegedly told Greek Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou that the United States had been involved in its removal from power.
"We can do this to any country we want. We can do it here," Guilfoyle was quoted as saying, according to a person who attended the dinner and others who were later briefed on the incident.
According to the newspaper's sources, Papastavrou replied that the United States could not replace the Greek government, as it was elected by the people. Guilfoyle's lawyer has disputed the version of the conversation presented by the Wall Street Journal.
"The government, and specifically the competent ministries of Foreign Affairs and Environment and Energy, are the only ones with the authority to provide any necessary explanation and to respond to the veracity of the published reporting," PASOK stated in a press release.
"Greece is an independent and sovereign democracy and has a duty to act as such in every case and towards all parties, without exception," the party added.
The Alliance of the Greek Left (ELAS) called the alleged statements "unprecedented and unacceptable."
“The government continues to remain silent, neither confirming nor denying the incident. For this reason, we call on the Mitsotakis government to immediately clarify to the Greek people whether the incident in question actually occurred; if so, why it has been kept secret since March; and whether, and in what way, the government has reacted.”
SYRIZA also stated that the revelations "are extremely serious and the government cannot continue to remain silent."
"If they are true, we are not dealing with a simple diplomatic incident, but with a violation of the country's governing system itself," the party declared.
SYRIZA also asked the government to explain why it insists on promoting the Vertical Gas Corridor and “further increasing Greece’s dependence on American LNG.”
The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) stated that the government “bears a heavy responsibility,” referring also to the expected visit to Greece, in a few days, of US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio. According to the KKE, the visit aims to further advance US plans in the region and renew the Greece-US strategic agreement.
Guilfoyle has played a key role in promoting the Vertical Gas Corridor, a regional infrastructure project that aims to transport gas from Greece, through Bulgaria and Romania, to Central and Eastern Europe, as an alternative to Russian gas. ( Ekathimerini )
