The question "What is the worst capital city in Europe?", posted on the popular forum r/AskReddit, sparked a heated debate with hundreds of comments.
Users from all over the world shared their often brutally honest opinions on European metropolises, basing them on personal experiences, from boredom and poor infrastructure to dirt and feelings of insecurity.
While every nomination is subjective, trends in the responses revealed clear favorites for this thankless title.
The capitals of the Balkans and Eastern Europe were among the first to be hit. Pristina, Podgorica and Chisinau received the most votes.
“Pristina, without a doubt,” wrote one user, and another agreed: “I’ve been to 34 European capitals, but the least interesting was Podgorica. Even Pristina is at least trying.” A Podgorica resident joined the discussion himself, joking that he had only come to read the comments about his city.
Chisinau, the capital of Moldova, was described in particularly vivid terms: "It looks like something out of the game Half-Life 2," one user commented, adding that the city is "garbage due to corruption."
Sofia, Minsk, Bucharest and Tirana, which is criticized for its lack of metro, trains and planned development, were also mentioned. However, one comment struck a more serious note, highlighting Kiev as the worst due to the constant Russian attacks, which reminded participants that the definition of “worst” can also have tragic dimensions.
What was most surprising was the number of negative votes for some of the most famous metropolises in Western Europe.
The absolute “winner” in this category is Brussels. “Sorry, Belgium, but in Western Europe, Brussels wins,” reads the most popular comment. Users described it as an extremely polluted and dangerous city, and one commenter claimed that the situation had deteriorated drastically in the last five years.
High on the list was Dublin, which Irish people and tourists criticized for its dirtiness, high prices and disastrous public transportation.
Even world-famous destinations like Paris and Rome have received harsh criticism. Users in Paris complained about the “smell of urine at every turn,” while Rome was described as “extremely polluted, with no functioning public transport,” with terrible traffic and a problem of overtourism.
