Kosovo is facing an alarming toll of murders of women.
During 2026, eight women were murdered in Kosovo, in cases that have shocked public opinion and have once again called into question the effectiveness of institutional mechanisms for preventing violence and ensuring women's safety, writes Klan Kosova.
Despite the constant statements of institutional representatives, some of these cases have provoked strong reactions, especially when they have been accompanied by question marks over the measures taken to prevent violence and protect victims.
The murder of Arlinda Zekaj on the evening of October 25 in Vitomirica, Peja, brought to eight the number of women killed in Kosovo this year, according to reported cases. Among the victims are a woman in her 60s, a pregnant 25-year-old, and another woman who had sought protection from institutions just three days before she was killed.
January – Restelica, Dragash
The year began with a serious incident in the village of Restelicë/Restelicë, Dragash/Dragaš, where a woman in her 60s was found dead. Her son, aged around 30, was suspected of murdering her. According to the Police, the suspect was arrested and detained for further legal proceedings, while authorities launched investigations to fully clarify the circumstances of the incident.
March – Majac, Podujevo
Another serious incident occurred in the village of Majac in Podujevo, where two women and a man lost their lives as a result of gunfire.
According to the Police, Ardita Gashi was suspected of fatally shooting Ilaz Brahimi, 45, who died at the scene. She was then suspected of taking hostage and wounding Miradije Gashi. The latter did not survive her injuries and died at the University Clinical Center of Kosovo.
Meanwhile, the suspect also died in hospital from the injuries she had sustained.
August – Malisheva
On the evening of August 23, Jetlira Foniqi Bytyqi, 25 years old and pregnant, lost her life after being shot in the village of Kërvasari, Malisheva.
Her husband, Egzon Foniqi, 26, who was also wounded by gunfire, was suspected of murdering her. Despite medical treatment, Jetlira did not survive her injuries, while her husband later died in hospital.

Tetor – Livoç i Ulët, Gjilan
