The American media outlet Contra Costa Herald has published a profile of the new United States ambassador to Albania, retired Lieutenant General Eric P. Wendt, who has been confirmed by the US Senate for this position.
According to American media, Wendt was nominated by President Donald Trump on April 13, 2026, for the position of US Ambassador to Albania. The Senate confirmed the nomination on August 7, while he was sworn in on August 19.
Wendt is expected to take up his post in Tirana after presenting his credentials to the President of the Republic, Bajram Begaj. As of the publication of this article, the US Embassy in Tirana had not confirmed his arrival in Albania.
In a reaction published on the social network X, the US Embassy in Tirana welcomed Wendt's confirmation and stated that he will work to strengthen common security, NATO, and economic relations between the two countries.
During his testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Wendt described Albania as an important U.S. partner and NATO ally. According to the Contra Costa Herald, his priorities are expected to include strengthening security cooperation, supporting the fight against corruption and organized crime, increasing cooperation in cybersecurity, and expanding economic and trade relations.
Eric Patrick Wendt was born on October 7, 1964, in Berkeley, California, and grew up in Clayton. He graduated from Clayton Valley High School in 1982.
Wendt has served in the U.S. Army for more than 34 years. He is a former Green Beret and attained the rank of three-star lieutenant general.
According to records released by the Naval Postgraduate School, his last assignment in the US military was as the head of NATO Special Forces Command. He assumed command in November 2019 and remained in that position until his retirement in 2021.
During his career, Wendt has held several senior military and leadership positions. He has served in Afghanistan, Korea, Europe, and the Middle East. He also served for a time as the U.S. security coordinator for Israel and the Palestinian Authority.
In this position, according to his official profile, he led a coalition of eight countries and reported directly to the US Secretary of State.
Wendt holds a bachelor's degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara and a master's degree from the Naval Postgraduate School. He speaks Arabic and Korean and has been decorated with several high U.S. medals and awards throughout his career.
He also served with the Albanian forces.
During the period when he headed the NATO Special Forces Command, Wendt also had contact with Albanian special operations structures.
According to documents published by the US Department of Defense and the Naval Postgraduate School, in this function he commanded the special forces of allied countries engaged within NATO, including Albanian special operations units.
His experience in Albania and the region was mentioned during his confirmation process in the US Senate.
A previous appointment for Qatar
This is not Wendt's first diplomatic appointment. In 2020, President Trump nominated him to be the US ambassador to Qatar.
However, his confirmation hearing did not take place before the end of the 116th Congress, and the nomination was returned unaddressed.
After retiring from the military in 2021, Wendt continued his work in the security and education fields. He worked as a professor of practice at the Naval Postgraduate School and served as an advisor to the U.S. Department of Defense in Korea.
According to the Contra Costa Herald, the US embassy in Tirana has been without a confirmed full-time ambassador since Yuri Kim's departure in 2023. Until Wendt's arrival, the diplomatic mission has been run by chargé d'affaires and temporary representatives.
In a statement quoted by US media, the State Department said that the Trump administration is building a diplomatic team and that Wendt is expected to work to advance US-Albania relations.
According to information published by the US State Department, Wendt had not yet arrived in Tirana at the time the Contra Costa Herald article was prepared.
