The "PISA 2025" test will focus on science, a new foreign language

Next year, the Global Learning Achievement Test "PISA 2025" will be developed, which will change the focus of the test from mathematics and reading to scientific knowledge, learning in the digital world and will have a new assessment for foreign languages.

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), which has been working to build policies for a better life for more than two decades, develops a global test to assess the average knowledge of students at the age of 15 in about 80 countries around the world.

Albania that has been part of this test since 2000 and underwent the last assessment in 2022. The results were poor doing two decades behind. In mathematics, Albanian students received 368 points, 69 points less than in the 2018 test and 21 points less than in 2012. In literature, they received 358 points, 47 less than in 2018 and 35 less than in 2012.

The OECD has announced the PISA 2025 testing framework, which will include the innovative domain, learning in the digital world, which aims to measure students' ability to engage in self-regulated learning while using digital tools, as PISA 2022 had the main focus on testing knowledge in mathematics.

The PISA 2025 assessment will measure how well countries are preparing their students with science and how science produces reliable knowledge. This is essential for citizens who need to make informed personal decisions about science-related phenomena such as health and the environment, to engage in action within their families, local communities and wider society.

"It is particularly important in the 21st century when humanity faces an uncertain future, an era in which human influence is significantly changing the Earth's systems," says the OECD about PISA 2025.

Previous PISA science assessment tests have elaborated a concept of "science education", while PISA 2025 moves to a broader framework. The focus of the document is now on general science education outcomes, to bring the science framework in line with mathematics and reading.

Science and its connection with the environment will be the focus of the 2025 test, but in the meantime Albania risks further worsening the ranking as the country is weak with digital education and scientific research.

In Albania, digital learning is completely absent in pre-university education. Digital classrooms are not functional, schools do not have tablets, internet, and moreover, teachers are not capable of developing learning with technology.
