In the absence or neglect of the railways, Albania, despite the higher costs of air transport, seems to have moved "ahead of time" with all developed countries, massively preferring for international travel, what was later discovered, although is even more costly of all: air transport,
There is an interesting fact. Albania is the only country in Europe that built the airport and then the railways. This is because of its historical backwardness. The airport required less time and expense, while it took dakada to build the railways, even with voluntary work.
The first flights in our country, in fact, started in 1926, but the first international airport of Tirana underwent reconstruction and opened between 1955-1957. At that time, railway lines in Albania were almost non-existent. But even though the railways were built with a lot of effort and sacrifice, surprisingly they have been taken away from the Albanians for years as a good and cheap opportunity for the national transport of goods or even of the citizens. Today, 30 years after the fall of communism, railways should be a good and cheap opportunity for international transport of goods, citizens, or even tourists.
Some projects to connect our railways with those of other countries have remained on paper, for the simple fact that the railway connecting Tirana with Durres is not yet operational.
What is the other country in Europe that, when it had them, sabotaged the railway lines just like Albania?
What is the other country that sees them as a "travel cost", apart from Albania?
According to INSTAT, in May 2022, the number of passengers traveling by rail is 1,882 passengers. Compared to May 2021, this indicator has increased by 2.9 times.
In the first five months of 2022, 7,626 passengers traveled by rail, increasing by 3.4 times compared to the same period of 2021. In May 2022, passenger air transport accounts for 87.0% of total transport .
Do not these figures sound ironic ?!
According to Instat, the number of passengers who traveled by airline in May 2022 is 450,796 passengers, increasing by 2.9 times, compared to May 2021. The number of passengers who traveled by airline, in the first five months of 2022 is 1,598,066 passengers, increasing by 3.2 times, compared to the first five months of 2021.
Referring to Instat, in May 2022, the number of passengers traveling by sea line is 65,599 passengers. Compared to May. 2021, this indicator has increased by 80.2%. In the first five months of 2022, 240,873 passengers traveled by sea, increasing by 55.3%, compared to the same period of 2021.
A good part of the volume of national and international transport, both for goods and for citizens, everywhere in Europe, but also in the world, is occupied by rail transport.
Even in the international transport of goods, Albanians seem to use airlines, as the railway does not exist.
According to official data of INSTAT, in May 2022, the volume of goods transported by rail is 1,618 thousand tons-kilometer, decreasing by 35.1%, compared to May 2021.
The volume of goods loaded / unloaded at ports in May 2022 decreased by 13.9%, compared to May 2021. In May 2022, the volume of air transported goods was 161.1 tons, decreasing by 17.8%, compared to May 2021. In the first five months of 2022, the volume of air transported goods is 817.4 tons, increasing by 1.4%, compared to the first five months of 2021. In May 2022, the number of flights performed is 3,588, increasing by 2.2 times, compared to May 2021.
So, in the absence or neglect of the railways, Albania despite the higher costs of air transport seems to have moved "ahead of time" with all developed countries, massively preferring for international travel, what was discovered later , though it is the most costly of all: air transport.
