How much sunflower oil do Albanians consume?

Sunflower oil continues to have a high presence in the consumption of Albanian families, despite fluctuations in the selling price. According to official data from the General Directorate of Customs provided by Scan TV, in 2023, despite the fact that there was a high amount of olive oil on the market, which managed to be traded at an average of 500 lek per liter, the import of sunflower oil has increased .

Specifically, in 2023, 23.3 thousand tons of sunflower oil were imported from 22.4 thousand tons imported in 2022, marking an increase of nearly 4%.

In 2022, sunflower oil was considered a luxury product due to the war in Ukraine, where transport was blocked and therefore the selling price in the market reached 370 ALL per liter, however even this drastic increase did not stop consumption.

Ukraine is the main supplier of sunflower oil, while in 2022 an agreement was made between Albania and North Macedonia to receive this product from this country.

If we compare the figures for the month of January, it can be seen that in 2022 1.8 thousand tons were imported, in 2023 there was a marked decrease in January to 781 tons and this year started again with high import at nearly 1.6 thousand tons.

This is also due to the increase in the price of olive oil as a result of the drop in production, which is currently traded at an average of 800 ALL/liter, but also to the decrease in the price of vegetable oil in the market compared to 2022.

Currently, the price of sunflower oil in markets ranges from 150-200 ALL/liter, which compared to the year 2022, results in a drastic decrease of more than 46%.
