The Bank of Albania announces that starting on May 28 of this year, metal coins with a nominal value of 10 lek, with a legal tender, issued in 2023, will be put into circulation. These coins have the same composition, appearance, size and weight as the issue the last of this cut.
The change from the last issue lies in the year of issue printed on the body of the metal coin, which in the new coins will be "2023". After about two weeks, these coins will be used as means of payment in parallel with all the existing metal coins in circulation of this denomination, issues of previous years.
Data from the Bank of Albania show that the value of national currencies in circulation, at the end of 2023, reached 408 billion ALL, or 6.8 billion ALL more than a year ago.
Putting the national currency "lek" into circulation is the exclusive duty of the Bank of Albania. It defines the shapes, weights, measures, model and other characteristics of the Albanian banknotes and coins, with legal tender within the country.
The reprinting of metal coins in the country is carried out for various reasons, such as economic needs, the lack of these coins, or even inflation, since in situations of inflation, metal coins are preferred as a way to preserve the value of money because the materials of which they are made of (such as metal) are more durable than banknotes in such conditions.
