In 20 years we lost 20 million cubic meters of forest. INSTAT: Volume decreased

The total volume of forests decreased by 1.64% in 2023, compared to 2022. According to data from the Institute of Statistics, the total volume of forests reaches about 53.17 million m3, of which 93.9% are public forests and 6.1%, private.

The volume of forests is the most significant indicator of the situation in forests, which has been shrinking for years, as a result of indiscriminate exploitation, burning or illegal cutting of hundreds of thousands of hectares of forests.

According to official data, in 2004 the forest volume was 73.5 million m3, which means that in 20 years we have lost over 20 million m3 of forest. Meanwhile, apart from illegal logging or fires, the data show that afforestation to replace lost trees is few.

From 2014 to 2022, the Ministry of Environment states that 11.4 million trees have been planted. According to experts, if we talk about a 2 by 2 afforestation scheme, we have 2500 seedlings planted in 1 ha. So in 9 years only 4574 ha were forested. At the same time, the National Forestry Agency also identifies the lack of works for the improvement of existing forests, such as clearing or thinning.

Meanwhile, according to INSTAT, in 2023 the forest and pasture fund of Albania was spread over a total area of 1,729,896 (ha), representing 60.1% of the country's total area.

The forest surface represents 68.3% of the forest and pasture fund, while the rest of 25.8% consists of pastures and meadows. Also, according to INSTAT, the areas with forest and non-productive vegetation that are part of the forest fund, occupy 5.9% of this fund.
