Banana trade booms, millions hidden behind increased imports

Albania imported 34 thousand tons of bananas last year, with a total value of about 25 million euros. According to Customs data, exotic fruit enters Albania from Ecuador and Colombia, which has tripled imports to our country in the last decade.

The Comtrade database of the United Nations Organization says that in 2011, Ecuadorian imports to Albania were around 10 million euros, while in 2020 the figure went to 26 million euros. Bananas make up the vast majority of them with 22 million euros.

The data show that Albanians consume an average of 13 kilograms of bananas per capita per year, about 1 kilogram more than the European Union average.

The market is also overpopulated with importing companies, where in the National Business Center, there are over 40 companies whose object is the import or trade of bananas.

But, for some of these companies, bananas are the visible part of the activity. The invisible is another. Police actions in the last three years have seized over 1.5 tons of cocaine hidden in banana containers.

This amount alone on the market is worth 500 million euros, or 20 times more than the value of the amount of bananas imported throughout the year 2021. The largest shipment seized remains that of February 2018, when 613 kilograms of cocaine were seized.
