The Albanian Energy Corporation intends to use the financial assistance of the European Union, given within the Growth Plan, to diversify the sources of electricity production.
Currently, KESH provides income only from the production of energy through hydropower plants in the Drin Cascade, which means that the corporate coffers are closely dependent on the whims of the weather. In dry years, KESH imports significant amounts of energy that empty its coffers, while in years with abundant rains, the income from energy export is also satisfactory.
In order to diversify resources, KESH will build and operate a solar energy production plant in the area of Dumre. According to the project, which is in an advanced stage, the plant will have a capacity of 50 megawatts, which ensures an average annual production sufficient to supply the entire district of Elbasan.
The project with a cost of almost 50 million euros is intended to be financed with grants from the European Union within the Growth Package, announced during the Tirana summit by the president of the commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
Currently, the government has identified two areas where the photovoltaic plant can be built and both without expropriation costs as they are state properties. The first area being examined is the Marina area, about 5 kilometers south-east of the town of Belshi, while the second area is on the border between the Municipality of Belshi and that of Kuçova, near the village of Kozare.
