FIAT closes its factory in Poland. European Union standards regarding greenhouse gas emissions from combustion engines and, as a result, a decrease in orders for units of this type. This is the reason for the liquidation of the power plant 'FCA Powertrain' in Bielsko-Biała. According to the information provided by the unions, 486 people will lose their jobs. Decisions on collective layoffs were made on January 3. However, the plant will not stop work immediately. The entire process is expected to take until the end of 2024. The petrol engines will be produced by the end of March, while the diesel engines by the end of May.
At the beginning of 2022, over 800 people worked at the Bielsko factory. In 2023, 300 employees were laid off. At the end of last year, final information was requested about the company, because all the employees were living in uncertainty and not knowing whether there would be work or not.
Talks will soon begin regarding the conditions under which employees will end their work and when this will happen. It is necessary to determine the appropriate amount of severance pay, depending on the length of service. This would limit the negative socio-economic effects resulting from the liquidation of the plant, according to the Workers' Union.
