In the next 30 years, the population of Albania is expected to reach 2 million. This is the projection of the United Nations Organization for the progress of the population in the world, ranking Albania among the 6 countries most at risk of shrinking by 2054.

But what has happened to the population of Albania over the years?

The population has currently reached 2.4 million inhabitants, suffering a decrease of about 420 thousand inhabitants or by 13.8% compared to the 2011 census. A trend that has continued during the last decades, if we look at the 1989 census. It clearly seems that Albania has entered a phase of population decline without return.

But parallel to the departures abroad, over the years there have also been massive movements of the population towards other areas, which is otherwise known as internal migration.

Due to displacement within the territory, approximately one third of the Albanian population, or about 32%, lives in the district of Tirana. The second district with the highest percentage of the population is Fieri with about 10%, followed by Elbasan and Durrës. While the least populated counties are Gjirokastra and Kukësi, with less than 3%.

What are the reasons for the reduction of the Albanian population?

There are three main factors: continuous and unstoppable emigration; the significant reduction in the number of births and the aging of the population. A situation that has effects in the short and long term for the Albanian society and economy, which have begun to be felt in us.

What happens are the problems with finding human resources in the labor market, these shortages lead to a decrease in the productivity of the economy; to a decrease in income as a whole in the economy. While the hospitalization of the elderly requires more expenses from the state budget for the pension scheme./A2
