NAME/The Durrës-Prishtina railway starts, the winner of the feasibility

The winner of the feasibility study for the Durrës-Prishtina railway is announced. The winner for the implementation of this project is "ILF Consulting Engineers Austria GmbH" - ABKONS SH.PK", with a winning offer of 168 million ALL or about 1.6 million euros. There were five other companies in the competition. The tender for this project was opened a year ago with a limited fund of 200 million ALL or about 1.7 million euros.

"The construction of the railway line (Durres - Pristina) is of special importance for Albania and Kosovo as it will enable a rapid development of railway transport of passengers and goods. This new railway line will first meet the transport needs of Albania and Kosovo, as well as the needs of the countries of the Western Balkans and beyond, including Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria and other countries that are also connected to Rail Corridor X (ten) and Rail Corridor IV (four),” said the terms of reference for the announced procedure.

The same document also gives three reasons why this line is of special importance. "The first is that through this railway line the exchange of goods transport between Albania, Kosovo and the wider region will increase significantly due to lower costs and greater capacities; the second is related to the development of passenger rail transport which will be very attractive and beneficial for both countries and beyond; while the third is that this railway line offers the best and most favorable alternative for the shortest connection of the railway network of Albania, namely the VIII railway corridor (eight) with the X railway corridor (ten)," the document states.

The duration of the study is 14 months, of which 2 (two) months for the initial phase and 12 (twelve) months for the preparation of the Study.

3 alternatives for the construction of the railway

1. Construction of the railway line (Mjeda - Kufi at Qafë Morinë - Kramovik)

The Albanian part of the route

The railway connection between Albania and Kosovo is conceived as a very difficult line, because it crosses a mountainous terrain. The total length from Mjeda to the border with Kosovo is about 107 km. The maximum design speed is expected to be 100 km/h.

The line starts from the existing station of Mjeda (in the Municipality of Vau i Deja and is part of the railway line Vorë - Hani i Hoti) which is considered KM 0+000 for the new line. Then, the new line enters the area of the Gjadri river passing through acceptable heights for the railway. Starting from KM 24+000 to KM 40+000, the line passes through two consecutive tunnels due to the difficult terrain up to the Repsi area, near the Rrëshen - Kalimash highway. After that, the line intersects with the highway entering a tunnel from the area of Bisak (Rrëshen) to the valley of Drini te Zi with a length of 11.5 km. At KM 81+000, the railway line crosses with a bridge over the artificial lake of the Fierza hydropower plant and at KM 93+000 the line reaches the Kukës railway station. As a final point, this line reaches Morina, the border point between Albania and Kosovo.

The preliminary geometric and technical data of this line are as follows:

The length of the railway line from the Mjedes - Morin station is about 107 km;

The total length of the tunnels is about 29.5 km;

The maximum designed slope is 18 ‰;

The minimum turning radius is 500 m.

The designed speed of train movement is 100 km/h, V= 4.62√R

Although the construction of the railway line is technically feasible, it is clear that the cost of the project will be high, due to the difficulties presented on the ground by crossing tunnels and intersections with public urban and interurban roads.

Itinerary in the part of Kosovo

The line starts from KP 18+733 (Kramovik railway station of the Klinë – Prizren railway line) towards the city of Gjakova. The line enters the valley of the river Drin by crossing the river through a bridge approximately 140 m long. After crossing the river, the route crosses the escarpment (cut and fill) of the valley to then cross the natural barrier through a 1,475 m long tunnel. After exiting the tunnel, the railway line takes the direction towards Gjakova, reaching the northern side of the city. From KM 7+000 to KM 8+500, the line follows the water flow and passes near the village of Bec and near the airport of Gjakova, to then continue towards the village of Qerim and the industrial area of the city of Gjakova.

A railway station with at least four lines will be built in Gjakova. From Gjakova, the railway route will follow the existing road crossing R-109/M 9-1 to the village of Ponoshec, and then continue parallel to M 9-1 to the border with Albania at Qafë Morinë. The total length of the route from the Kramovik station to the border at Qafë Morinë is estimated at about 30 km.

2. Construction of the railway line (Milot – Border in Vërmica – Landovicë)

The Albanian part of the itinerary

Since 1999, the railway connection between Albania and Kosovo has been conceived through the existing line from Milot to the town of Rrëshen and the further extension towards the gorge of Fan i Vogël. In 2005, the construction of the Milot - Rrëshen - Kalimash highway began in the body of the railway track, at the exit from the Milot station in the direction of the Rubik station. The Albanian part of the line together with the Milot - Rrëshen part covers a length of about 108 km. This part has a tunnel with a length of about 11.5 km which enters the area of Bisak and exits in the area of Drin i Zi near Skavica.

The Kosovar part of the route

The line will be separated from the railway line Klinë - Prizren at KM 52+200. From this point of separation, the route continues to the suburban Arbana neighborhood of Prizren, continuing along the national highway 'Ibrahim Rugova' (E 85). Then, the line passes near the villages of Grazhdanik and Vlashnje towards the village of Vërmicë and the border point with Albania. The total length of the route from the dividing point of the Klinë - Prizren Line to the border in Vermica is calculated at about 17 km. The consultant would analyze both the options mentioned above.

3. The consultant will be determined by himself

This alternative remains to be analyzed and selected by the consultant himself, according to the site visits and the calculations made, and as such will be proposed to the client
