Our country has imported nearly 50 million liters of beer during the period January-November 2023, where the tourist season has given a high incentive. The data of the General Directorate of Customs show that the increase in the amount of cleared beer has been progressive from year to year, and if we compare the period 2020-2023, the jump has been by nearly 13 million liters in favor of imports.

Translated into monetary value, throughout this year imported beer has increased to the value of 54 million dollars.

But what is the origin map of where this product comes from? According to Scan TV, customs data show that Albania imports beer from 22 countries in total. Where the first place is occupied by Greece, with a value of 7.8 million dollars, followed by Germany with 4.9 million dollars, Serbia with 3.4 million dollars and then the Netherlands and the Czech Republic. While Kosovo, France and Austria are the countries from which we import less.

Foreign brands have also gained ground due to the doubling of the beer excise duty from January 1, 2023 for domestic production, a measure which has had negative effects on the industry. Albanian beer seems to be suffering from competition due to increased costs related to both raw materials and labor.

The production of the country before the fiscal changes was charged with 360 ALL/HL for producers under 200,000 HL, while for production above this level the excise duty was 710 ALL. After the changes in the law "On excise duties in the Republic of Albania", which entered into force on January 1, 2023, the tax was unified at 710 lek for producers under and over 200,000 Hl, both domestic and foreign.
