Have businesses increased in Albania in 2023, or is there more formalization?

The positive performance of the economy throughout 2023 has also been reflected in the increase in the number of new businesses. According to official data from the General Directorate of Taxes provided by SCAN TV, it results that the number of active taxpayers, who have a tax liability in the National Registry at the end of 2023, is registered at 127,698 taxpayers in total from 123,340 taxpayers at the end of 2022. In other words, there are approximately 4,358 more active taxpayers than in 2022.

According to the categorization of taxpayers, based on the level of realized and self-declared turnover, at the end of the year there are: 93,709 taxpayers registered in small business, 31,222 taxpayers in large business and 2,767 others.

In the total number of active taxpayers, 34,767 taxpayers are registered for VAT tax liability at the end of 2023, of which 9,450 are small business taxpayers.

Tax data shows that during 2023, 18,777 subjects were registered as new taxpayers for the first time, which is 604 more than in 2022. The number of active taxpayers does not include 96,835 farmers/agricultural producers who have no liability tax.

Only in 2023, 12,995 farmers were registered by the Regional Tax Directorates in the districts. This number is expected to increase again this year due to national schemes, where the main condition for benefit is the provision of the farmer's nephew.
