The two Albanian states of the Western Balkans, Albania and Kosovo, throughout these years have recognized a strengthening of economic cooperation. The agreements signed over the years between the governments have brought the two countries even closer, significantly increasing human and economic exchanges.
Kosovo is turning into a very important market for Albanian goods, especially construction materials and metals. Trade exchanges between the two countries have doubled, turning Kosovo into one of the trade partners with the fastest growing exchanges. Beyond the steps that have been taken in the past years, this year seems to have been the year of a major rapprochement between the two countries in terms of infrastructure.
An important step was that of January 1 of this year, when the opening of the air corridors between Albania and Kosovo was made official. Since the post-war period, in 1999, flights to and from the Pristina International Airport have been carried out only through the air corridor that connects Kosovo with North Macedonia. Already with the use of the air corridor of Albania, Kosovo's journeys to the west and vice versa are shortened by 15 minutes. This means not only shortening the flight time, but also reducing the price of tickets for those traveling to and from Kosovo.
Another step in the direction of the union of the two countries was that of February 1 of this year. This date also marked the official merger of the Albania-Kosovo energy market, with the sale of energy traded on the Albanian Electricity Exchange, ALPEX. The operation of the Albanian Electricity Exchange started in April last year, while the merger of the bidding areas Albania - Kosovo was part of the plan, to enable a wider market.
Currently, there are 21 member companies in the Albanian Energy Exchange, while the vast majority are Albanian companies. More specifically, there are 17 companies from Albania, including 5 public energy companies, and 4 companies from Kosovo. 2 of the latter are public and the other 2 are private.
Another important project that contributes to the infrastructural union of both countries is the construction of the Durrës - Prishtina railway. This project, which has already started, gives access to Kosovo and the Mediterranean Sea. This railway is considered to be important both economically and geopolitically.
The approximate cost of the Durrës-Prishtina railway is estimated at 700 million euros. This railway is considered not only a commercial transport alternative that will connect the port of Durrës with the dry port of Pristina, but also for travelers.
