Matthew Perry and the Curse of Being Famous

It was 1994 when 24-year-old Matthew Perry — who wasn't yet Friends' Chandler because the show didn't exist yet — knelt on the floor of his Los Angeles apartment and begged God to do whatever he wanted with him. "it is enough to let him become famous once".

American newspapers have written extensively about his book "Friends, Girlfriends and the Terrible Thing". There he talks about girlfriends (the famous ones, from Julia Roberts to Gwyneth Paltrow); friends (mainly for Aniston, who did not become his girlfriend, as she received a "disheartening lack of interest" in Perry's feelings for her); and above all the terrible thing: pills, alcohol, and everything that turned the actor's life into a nightmare.

But it seems to me that the subject of Chandler's autobiography of "Friends" is another. Fame. The scene where he knelt down and prayed to God happened just 3 weeks before he was accepted to the auditions held for the new series "Friends". Perry writes in the book that God granted his wish.

But he also remembered the first part of the prayer, and God really did everything with him. (He knows that he did it to himself, but he uses it as more of a figurative expression). “After all these years, I'm sure I'm famous enough not to waste my whole life trying to be famous. You have to become famous, to learn that becoming famous is not the answer. None of those who are not famous will ever believe this".

I know you're not impressed: Because it's 2022 and fame is a "currency" that seems to belong to everyone. We're all a little bit famous, but no one (or almost no one) is to the extent that Chandler from "Friends" was.

Even if the numbers are subjective today, let's mention a fact: Even in the weakest seasons, in the United States, "Friends" had 20 million viewers. In the best 30 million, while the series finale was seen by 52 million sitting in front of the television, not counting those who watched it later on VHS tapes).

Everyone knew Chandler from "Friends". So if he wanted to go to a detox clinic in Switzerland he had to charter a private jet. On one occasion European nurses performed a miracle when his heart stopped during one of the many operations.

Three days after the release of his book, one of the most underlined sentences is: "You have to realize all your dreams, to realize that they were the wrong dreams!".

If we really can't be famous, we want at least one celebrity to somehow "fill" our lives. And on this neurosis is based a sub-economy of platforms on which the celebrity offers not videos with his children, but also his own, adapted for us common people.

For example, for such a sum, my brother-in-law can tell me "Guia, happy birthday, you are lucky that your brother-in-law loves you so much" by actors, singers, athletes and the most famous characters of the XXI century in Cameo, Vipresent, Hype Me .

They are engaged in such things because they have to survive: these are no longer the days when an actor's performances were seen by 50 million people in a night, and when he was paid accordingly. And when a few years later he no longer needed to work.

At one point Julia Roberts sends a private plane to pick up Perry, who writes "I thought I was rich: this is riches." And only 5 years had passed since the release of the movie "Pretty Woman". Today, an actress with a solid 5-year film career buys a first-class ticket only if the sponsor pays for it.

The only thing we love as much as the illusion that a famous person knows our name is the illusion that the famous person has the same problems as us. That's why Matthew Perry's is the book of the year.

The tabloids have been constantly talking about Perry's problems, because fame gives it, and fame takes it away. Matthew Perry's father told him that on one occasion he got drunk by being funny. His wife criticized him. In those conditions he went for a walk and decided to quit drinking.

The son called this parallelism insulting. “A walk? I have spent over $7 million trying to detox. I have been to 6,000 Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. I went to 15 detox clinics. On one occasion I was admitted to a psychiatric ward. I have been in therapy with a psychologist twice a week for the past 30 years. In one case I suffered clinical death, and you call that a walk?”.

Matthew Perry's father is neither famous nor rich. A walk is a luxury for anonymous people who have not made money by selling their souls to the public: "My father does not have seven million dollars to spend. Life gives it, and life takes success."
